For those who don’t know or perhaps don’t recall, USA Today annually releases its list of the top art museums in the country. In recent years Detroit’s growing art scene has taken the country by storm, and now is being considered the best in the country!
The Detroit Insitute of Arts ranked the best art museum in America two years in a row
In 2023, the DIA claimed the top spot, beating out iconic art museums from all corners of the nation including the MET in New York City and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
In 2024, USA Today doubled down on its stance of the DIA being the best art museum in the entire country, crediting its immense collection of impressive art coupled with its well-balanced curation and exciting rotation of novel exhibitions.
How to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts
If you want to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, odds are that you will not be disappointed! With over 65,000 unique works of art in their collection, it happens to be one of the biggest and most comprehensive collections in the country!
There is a consistently rotating series of exhibits and displays being set up for visitors to view and enjoy at the DIA, here are two of the collections that they currently have on display:
- Japanese Friendship Dolls (Dec. 2, 2023 – June 5th, 2024)
- An exhibition dedicated to the history of the unique art form that is Japanese Friendship Doll making.
- Regeneration (Feb. 4th, 2024 – June 23rd, 2024)
- An exhibit dedicated to the legacy of African American filmmakers and actors that were active between 1898 and 1971.
In addition to these two current exhibits, there are also six more exhibits already scheduled to be added throughout 2024!
Is it free to visit?
Yes, the Detroit Institute of Arts is completely free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, and admission can be reserved online if you want to plan your visit ahead of time. Just make sure that you bring a valid ID to the front desk and you will claim your free admission.
However, if you are not a resident of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties then you’ll have to buy entry tickets. Ticket prices are as follows:
- Adults – $18
- Senior / College Student with ID – $10
- Youth (6-17) – $8
- Children (5 and under) – Free
- Members – Free
