Detroit has been ranked the most single city in the United States, according to new research analyzing Census data from major cities nationwide.
The study found that 57.36% of Detroit residents are officially single, the highest percentage recorded nationwide, meaning unattached adults now outnumber those who are married or in long-term relationships by a significant margin.
The ranking comes at a time when dating is becoming increasingly expensive for Americans.
Researchers found that the average “all-in” cost of a date—including dinner, drinks, transportation, and pre-date grooming—has climbed to $189, up from $168 just one year ago.
As dating costs continue to rise, nearly half of single Americans say romance is no longer worth the financial investment, raising questions about how economic pressures may be reshaping modern relationships.

Detroit topped the national rankings after researchers found that 57.36% of adults in the city are single, the highest share among all major U.S. cities analyzed.
The numbers were elevated across both genders, with 59.03% of men and 55.94% of women recorded as single.
In practical terms, that means nearly three out of every five men in Detroit are currently unattached.
Nationally, nearly 47% of single Americans say dating is no longer financially worthwhile, while 50% of singles aged 18 and older report they are not interested in either a committed relationship or casual dating.

The research was conducted using publicly available U.S. Census data to compare the share of adults classified as single across major American cities.
Researchers analyzed the percentage of residents who were officially recorded as unmarried, with separate breakdowns for men and women.
Cities were then ranked according to their overall proportion of single adults.
