Seasonal Depression is all too real and most of us Michiganders and Detroiters are quite familiar with the bleak winter weather having such a big impact on our mental health. Just this year, a study found that Michigan ranked the 8th most impacted state in the country by Seasonal Affective Disorder, otherwise known as seasonal depression.
The good news for Detroiters is that we’ve passed a milestone in terms of our transition from winter to spring! Now days in Detroit are officially getting longer and we will not get another sunset before 6 pm until next November, when daylight-savings will ‘fall back’ making us lose an hour. As of February 26th, sunsets in Detroit are around 6:18 pm but with daylight saving’s ‘spring forward‘ in just a few weeks on March 10th, we can expect a whole lot more sunlight coming in the not-so-distant future.
How Detroiters can celebrate the later sunsets
With later sunsets in Detroit, the obvious answer for how to celebrate this milestone is to spend the extra time you have outside!
Walk around some of Detroit’s best outdoor destinations
Whether you want to just get some fresh are or just want to spend a moment with your significant other doing something you don’t necessarily do every day.
Some of these places may be worth checking out!
- Along the Detroit RiverWalk

Grab a meal at a restaurant with outdoor seating
It doesn’t matter if it’s a patio, rooftop, or terrace, just being able to get outside with friends or family is something that some of us look forward to the most during the spring and summer! So what better way to appreciate the longer days ahead of us than by planning a few drinks or a decent meal with those you care about at a place where you can appreciate the later sunsets?
