While we all know that Detroit has been an outstanding place to live for years now, and while the city did admittedly face a down period in the past, since its renaissance began decades ago, Detroit has continued to be one of the most underrated places to live in the country.
While we’ve known this for a while, it’s always a pleasure to see Detroit get the recognition that it deserves on a national scale!
That’s exactly why we’ve been so pleased to see that major travel magazine ‘Travel & Leisure’ just published an entire article dedicated to Detroit and what makes it the nation’s most underrated city!

Why Detroit is considered the nation’s biggest hidden gem by Travel + Leisure
To quote Travel+ Leisure’s Midwest native writer, Iona Brannon, “the reports of Detroit’s death have been greatly exaggerated.”
The reality they are aware of is that the city of Detroit never died; it just went dormant as the city’s culture developed to overcome obstacles and face adversity head-on.
Today, the persistence of Detroit and its residents can seemingly be sensed even by those who don’t call Detroit!
The top things that stood out about Detroit in their article were:
- Detroit’s thriving and growing culinary scene.
- The local art scene is driving conversations on a national scale.
- An extensive and unique automotive history that helped form the nation we know today.
- The home of Motown music, Detroit’s role in shaping American pop culture is undeniable.
- Detroit’s abundant access to green outdoor spaces in and around the city gives the city a set of lungs that bring in much-needed fresh air and plenty of room for activities.
- The several renovation projects that have either recently been completed or will be soon show that Detroit is investing in its community and tirelessly aiming to improve the quality of life for residents.
