One of Detroit’s most iconic donut shops, Dutch Girl Donuts, is set to make a triumphant return with new ownership after closing its doors back in 2021. The local favorite donut spot was first opened in 1947 by the married couple of Gene and Lauren Timmer, sadly when the two founders of the legendary local donut shop passed away in 2021 the family-owned business closed its doors.
Fortunately, the donut shop responsible for feeding entire generations of Detroiters is set to triumphantly return with new ownership in 2024! In a positive twist of fate, the new owner of Dutch Girl Donuts is actually local business owner and entrepreneur, Paddy Lynch, who was a close family friend of the Timmer family. Given the sentimental connection between Lynch and Dutch Girl Donuts and his friendship with the Timmer family, the Timmer family, who had passed on over 30 separate offers to buy the business, agreed to hand over the reins to Paddy Lynch.
Who is the new owner?
The new owner is none other than local business owner Paddy Lynch. You may recognize his name as his family is the owners of Detroit’s notable bathhouse, The Schvitz, as well as the local funeral home business, Lunch & Sons. We are excited about this for a number of reasons, the first of which is that he’s a local Detroiter! He openly stated that he’d been going to Dutch Girl Donuts since he was a kid and that it was already popular before he was even born! The second is that he is actually a family friend of the family that originally owned and operated Dutch Girl Donuts up until they closed it in 2021. Given that the family that operated this business for nearly 80 years trusted Paddy to continue on the legacy of Dutch Girl Donuts, we are feeling confident that it is going to be just as good as we remember.
When is it going to open?
There isn’t a very specific launch date yet, but we know that it’s very soon! According to the Instagram account of Dutch Girl Donuts, they are aiming to be open by Mother’s Day!
