While you can certainly have a good time in Detroit without spending a fortune, the fact of the matter is that costs add up quickly these days.
So if you’re looking to make a budget-friendly plan around the D with your friends, family, or just with that special someone, here are eight of our favorite free things to do in Detroit!
1. Stroll along the RiverWalk
This incredibly multi-mile path alongside the Detroit River from Rosa Park Blvd to the Bell Isle Bridge is a great spot for a long walk, bike ride, or even a picnic if you’re interested in fresh air and having some fun for free!
The path is dotted with great places to stop like restaurants, volleyball courts, parks, and more.
2. Check out the Detroit Institute of Arts
Free for Wayne County residents and open six days a week, the DIA is a must-visit for art connoisseurs or culture lovers.
With over 65,000 pieces of art from every corner of the world, this is the perfect place to enrich yourself and soak up some culture during a rainy day in Detroit.

3. Spend an afternoon at the Belle Isle Aquarium
Considered ‘America’s Oldest Orginal Aquarium’ according to its website, The Belle Isle Aquarium is free to visit but encourages a $5 donation upon entry.
This place is an amazing spot to go with a family if you want a fun day or even a unique plan for a fun date that’ll let you save your funds for something else!
4. Swing by Campus Martius Park for free things to do all year long
Whether it’s Cadillac Lodge during the Winter season or interactive activities and spots to hang out during the Summer, Campus Martius Park was voted one of the best public squares in the nation for a reason!
5. Head to the Outdoor Adventure Center along the RiverWalk
Right on the Riverfront of Detroit, the Outdoor Adventure Center is located inside the historic Globe Building.
It’s a perfect experience with a group, particularly with kids, where you can experience all the amazing outdoor activities that Michigan has to offer but with the safety and comfort of a controlled indoor environment.
It’s free for children under 2 years of age, only $3 for kids up to 12 years old, and $5 for adults.
Location: 1801 Atwater Street
6. Visit The Heidelberg Project
The Heidelberg Project is an art initiative started in 1986 by Artist Tyree Guyton in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood.
The project has converted what was once a series of vacant lots and houses into an incredible outdoor art exhibit using things like shoes, tires, clothes, and even TVs to create a constantly evolving artistic experience.
7. Stroll on through the recently reopened Michigan Central Station
Open on Fridays between 5 and 9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, the recently refurbished, restored, and reopened Michigan Central Station is free to enter where you can enjoy a self-guided tour to learn about the building’s remarkable history.
There are certain days when the opening hours may differ, so be sure to check their website before planning your visit!
