For the first time in Detroit’s history, the city will officially be featured in the Michelin Guide!
Starting next year, the world-famous fine-dining guide will expand with a new Great Lakes regional guide, featuring and ranking some of the region’s greatest restaurants across a handful of cities.
What cities are going to be featured in the ‘Great Lakes’ Michelin Guide?
The new regional guide from Michelin is going to highlight the greatest talent and food cultures across six new cities that have never before been reviewed by Michelin!
Those six new cities include:
- Detroit
- Cleveland
- Indianapolis
- Milwaukee
- Pittsburgh
- Mineapollis
This means that over the next year, Michelin inspectors, who operate in total secrecy, will visit what may amount to hundreds of restaurants across these cities to determine which ones are deserving of the honor of being in the 2027 Great Lakes Michelin Guide.

What is the Michelin Guide and how does it work?
The Michelin Guide, produced annually by the tire company Michelin, is a world-famous, highly reputable dining guide that suggests the best dining destinations in a particular region.
It’s worth noting also that while inclusion in the Michelin Guide is considered an honor for any chef and/or restaurant, the opportunity for a city to be reviewed by Michelin and to have its restaurants included in a Michelin Guide requires that the city pay a fee for the right to be judged.
Michelin does this because their fine dining guide has become so reputable that it has developed into valuable marketing material for each city’s tourism!
The Michelin Guide’s famous rating system breaks down as follows:
- 1 Star – A very good restaurant with high-quality cooking; worth stopping if you’re nearby.
- 2 Star – Excellent cuisine with refined technique; worth going out of your way for.
- 3 Star – Exceptional, world-class dining; worth planning a special trip around.
- Bib Gourmand – Considered high-quality food at a great value.
- Green Star – Considered a pioneer in mindful gastronomy.
