1. Detroit Public Library – Chandler Park
As one of the largest state libraries in Michigan, Detroit Public Library just had to be included in our list of the city’s most fabulous libraries. Although the building’s construction was completed in 1921, the library’s archives date all the way back to 1865. With such a huge database that spans over so many years, the library gives visitors the chance to unearth Motor City’s most riveting stories and hidden secrets that have been waiting to be uncovered for over 150 years.
As well as owning an enormous archive, Detroit Public Library runs an initiative known as TIP – a free referral program that gives those in need access to information on matters regarding health care, housing, counseling and more. With a focus on promoting literacy and providing information on vital social services, this library plays a fundamental role in supporting the city’s most vulnerable communities.

2. Wayne State University Library System – Midtown
Take your pick from the five major libraries that make up the Wayne State University Library System. Although these Detroit libraries are situated on a college campus, the general public is more than welcome to take full advantage of them.
In fact, thousands of students and other inquisitive Detroit residents visit the library each year to get unlimited access to the 56,000 journals and more than 800,000 e-books that Wayne State has on offer.
Visitors can also make use of the library’s large number of study rooms that provide tranquil areas to work in. Trying to beat a deadline and can’t focus at home? Then Wayne State University Library is the best spot for some much-needed peace and quiet.

3. Detroit Institute of Arts Research Library – Midtown
DIA publications, auction catalogues, e-books and international museum publications are just a few examples of what’s on offer at the Detroit Institute of Arts Research Library.
Aside from holding a multitude of resources, this library is also home to an extensive art collection made up of over 65,000 paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photographs. To top it all off, the library also hosts movie screenings inside its magnificent Detroit Film Theatre. By maintaining its original 1920s decor, this glamorous movie theater provides an old Hollywood ambiance for visitors to immerse themselves in while watching the best of contemporary and classical cinema.

4. CCS Library – Midtown
Fueled by the mission to promote research, critical thinking and innovation, CCS Library assists the local community by providing services and resources that help support education and widen perspectives. As a way of inspiring the next generation of artists, designers and innovators, the library’s collection focuses largely on the history and importance of the arts.
Those less interested in the library’s literary resources and more concerned about finding a place to study will be happy to know that CCS houses several group study rooms, too. Reserve one of these peaceful havens so you can revise for that super important exam with a little help from your friends (just try not to get distracted).
