Just north of Detroit, Rochester Hills is suddenly getting national attention after being named the #7 best place to live in the United States by U.S. News & World Report’s new 2026-2027 rankings.
The annual list evaluated hundreds of communities across the country based on factors like affordability, quality of life, desirability, and job market strength.
Ranking the #1 place to live in Michigan, Rochester Hills was the only community in the state to break into the national top 10 this year.
The suburb, located in Oakland County, has long been known locally for its highly rated schools, extensive park system, and suburban quality of life!
Why Rochester Hills ranked among the best places to live in America
U.S. News & World Report said the 2026-2027 rankings focused heavily on what Americans currently value most in a place to live: affordability, livability, and economic stability.
Rochester Hills stood out for its strong balance of suburban comfort and access to the Detroit metro area’s jobs, entertainment, and infrastructure.
The city is widely known for its highly regarded public schools, family-friendly neighborhoods, and large amount of green space, including trails and parks throughout the community.
The suburb also improved from its previous placement in last year’s rankings.
In the 2025-2026 edition of the report, Rochester Hills ranked No. 9 nationally — meaning the city moved up two spots since last year.
The top 10 list was dominated by suburbs and mid-sized cities rather than major urban centers, reflecting a broader national trend toward communities that offer lower costs of living, strong job markets, and higher perceived quality of life.
How the 2026 U.S. News rankings were calculated
For the 2026-2027 rankings, U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 850 cities across the country before publishing its top 250 places to live.
The methodology measured cities using several major categories, including:
- Affordability and value
- Quality of life
- Desirability
- Job market strength
- Migration trends and infrastructure
The rankings also incorporated data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, FBI, FEMA, Bureau of Labor Statistics, NOAA, and Applied Geographic Solutions.
This year, affordability carried even greater weight in the rankings as Americans continue prioritizing lower housing costs and overall cost of living. U.S. News said consumer surveys showed many people are now placing financial stability ahead of aspirational lifestyle factors when deciding where to live.
That shift helped elevate suburban communities like Rochester Hills, which combine relatively strong household incomes, good schools, and access to major employment centers without the costs often associated with larger cities.
