The reputable home security company SafeWise recently released a study that reviewed and ranked the top 100 Safest Cities in the United States.
The study went beyond simple crime rate statistics to tell the proper story of a city’s safety that delves deeper than surface-level statistics.
The safest city in Michigan is just 30 minutes from Detroit
According to the study’s ranking, the #22 safest city in the United States, and the #1 safest city in Michigan, is actually the Grosse Ile Township, which has a population of just about 10.3K, and is around 30 minutes southeast of Detroit.
Grosse Ile is actually on the largest island in the Detroit River, at around 9.6 square miles, and is the most populated island in the entire state of Michigan.
While a majority of the Grosse Ile Township is located on Gross Ile (which just means Big Island), the entire township is spread across several smaller islands that are in proximity to Grosse Ile.
According to the study, the township had a violent crime rate of 0.0 per 1,000 people and a property crime rate of just 2.4 instances per 1,000 people.

Why the small town is definitely worth a visit
Grosse Ile is actually a unique destination that most Detroiters might not be familiar with!
In addition to being considered one of the safest cities in the country, the Grosse Ile Township is also where you’ll be able to find the historic lighthouse at Hennepin Point, which is the northernmost point on the big island, and also the center of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge!
A visit to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge alone makes the trip here worth it in our opinion, with several hiking paths and plenty of opportunities to view unique wildlife.
