This past week, USA Today released a ranking that compiled the top ten best science museums in the United States, and midtown Detroit’s Michigan Science Center was ranked the #3 science museum in the entire country!
What makes the Michigan Science Center one of the best in the country?
Originally opened as the Detroit Science Center when it was opened in 1970, it closed due to financial difficulties in 1999, but then, in 2012, after some extensive remodeling, it was reopened to the public as the Michigan Science Center. The Science Center’s extensive modernization at the time enabled the museum to expand its space for exhibitions and incorporate additional attractions like:
- Stages for live shows
- High-def planetarium,
- IMAX Dome
- 4D theatre
- Facilities for hosting various educational programs and events
In addition to having incredible resources and attractions for Detroiters to visit and enjoy, the Michigan Science Center’s key missions focus on inspiring a sense of curiosity and interest amongst all its visitors in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). As a result of this being the Center’s mission, there is a wealth of workshops, camps, educational outreach programs, and resources to foster and facilitate a love for STEM subjects among children, which is something that had a profound impact on the Michigan Science Center’s high national ranking.
The Center has over 220+ interactive exhibits with experiences that are perfect for audiences of all ages, ranging from young children up to adults, with unique galleries dedicated to Space, Health, Motion, Math, Weather, and more!
