The Detroit Zoo has recently announced a new addition to its long list of residents, a new tiger named Darya!
Darya is a 2-year-old Amur tiger (also known as a Siberian tiger), who was born at the Saint Louis Zoo on November 13th, 2023.
Why did the Detroit Zoo get a new tiger?
The relocation of Darya was said to be part of a conservation effort by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums known as their ‘Species Survival Plan’.
The plan outlines a meticulous effort to ensure a healthy and genetically diverse animal population, predominantly through carefully crafted breeding plans that connect zoos all around the world.
In the case of Darya, who is still around 2 years from reaching full maturity, has been moved to the Detroit Zoo to live alongside 8 year old Nikolai and 14 year old Ameliya.
The presumed goal of this move is that, at some point in the future, Nikolai and Darya will mate and produce a litter of Amur tiger cubs, particurly since Ameliya will be aging out of her breeding window soon.
When can you visit the Detroit Zoo’s new tiger?
Darya is already exploring her new space and has been interacting with her two new roommates, Nikolai and Darya, since she arrived at the Detroit Zoo earlier this week!
Ticket prices vary per day, but a general admission pass to enter the zoo and view the tigers will range between $16 and $21 per person.
There are discounted youth tickets for children between the ages of 2 and 12 or seniors over the age of 65, and those can range between $13 and $18 per person.
If you plan to park at the zoo, the price for a parking pass is $8 per car for all non-members.
