The city of Frankenmuth, Michigan, is one of the most underrated weekend destinations in the Detroit area!
The city has all the charm of a small Bavarian village in southern Germany, complete with its iconic architecture, authentic cuisine, and fun, unique boutique Bavarian shops.

What makes Frankenmuth such a special destination?
While the city of Frankenmuth has a rich history, it’s hard to pin down just one feature that makes it such a charming destination for a weekend trip from the D.
- Referred to as “Michigan’s Little Bavaria”, the entire town features European-inspired architecture, giving it a festive and inviting atmosphere all year long.
- Home to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest year-round Christmas store, drawing over 2 million visitors annually.
- The location of the oldest brewery in Michigan, Frankenmuth Brewery, which was founded in 1862.
- Home of ‘Zehnders of Frankenmuth‘, one of the largest family restaurants in America, famous for its ‘All-You-Can-Eat’ family-style chicken dinners.
- Host of one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations in America, being the first town in America to be allowed to import German beer for the celebration directly from Munich.
- Possesses one of the biggest beer halls in the United States, the Harvey Kern Community Pavilion, capable of fitting around 5,000 patrons.

When is the best time to visit Frankenmuth?
The best time, in our experience, is approaching now!
Frankenmuth is a beautiful sight year-round, but during the early fall, when the leaves begin to turn and the colder weather hasn’t fully arrived, it may be one of the most beautiful places in the world! (We’re not biased at all)
Given the massive Germanic cultural influence of the town, this year’s Oktoberfest, which is taking place between September 18th and 21st, is truly a can’t-miss event!

There is also something incredibly special about the Christmas season here, with Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland being so close, you can imagine everyone in town has no excuse not to embrace the holiday spirit, making the town’s Christmas Market a great visit on the weekends between late-November and mid-December.
These events are undoubtedly each a fun experience, but if you want to see Frankenmuth at its most quaint and charming, you may want to avoid visiting around these dates to avoid crowds of other tourists or overpaying while in town.
